Man impersonates provincial police chief to swindle 4.5 billion VND from his aunt.
Le Quoc Thien (born in 2002) provided false information and impersonated a provincial police leader to swindle and embezzle 4.5 billion VND from his relatives.
On November 4th, the Tien Giang Provincial Police announced that investigators are temporarily detaining Le Quoc Thien (born in 2002, residing in An Thai Trung commune, Cai Be district) for investigation into his alleged misconduct.fraud and misappropriation of property.
During questioning, Thien admitted that he needed money to pay off debts and for personal expenses, so he came up with the idea of defrauding his aunt, who lives abroad, of her assets. In November 2023, Thien lied to his aunt, claiming he was working at a professional department of the Tien Giang Provincial Police.
Thien wanted to get a permanent position, so he asked his aunt to send him money to help with the process. Thien also accessed social media and rented three Zalo accounts.
Thien used these accounts and impersonated a leader of the Tien Giang Provincial Police to befriend his aunt. Thien pretended to be a police leader to chat with his aunt via Zalo. The victim trusted him and transferred money to Thien to handle the matter.
Furthermore, Thien also impersonated a leader of the Tien Giang Provincial Police, suggesting that his aunt buy four liquidated cars at a cheap price. Thien used various excuses such as paying taxes and transfer fees to continue defrauding her of money.
Using the above scheme, from November 2023 to August 2024, Thien defrauded his aunt of over 4.5 billion VND. Thien spent the stolen money on personal expenses.
