On May 5th, the rice market in the Mekong Delta recorded a price increase in the export-grade raw rice segment, while the price of fresh paddy remained stable due to gradually decreasing supply.

The rice market in the Mekong Delta region on May 5th saw mixed trends. According to market experts, the price of raw rice for export showed a significant improvement, while the price of fresh paddy rice at the farm gate generally remained relatively stable within a narrow range.

Prices of fresh rice remain stable in all localities.

According to updates from specialized agencies in An Giang, the price of fresh rice of all types remains stable. Trading activities in localities such as An Giang, Can Tho, Dong Thap, Vinh Long, and Ca Mau are quite slow due to the less abundant supply of fresh rice compared to previous periods.

Notably, some warehouses have begun shifting their focus to purchasing dry paddy rice, especially high-quality varieties such as Dai Thom 8 and Japonica. However, overall market activity remains quite sluggish.

Exports of raw rice have increased sharply.

In contrast to the sideways trend of fresh paddy rice, the market for raw rice for export is showing positive signs. Specifically:

  • IR 504 rice:The price increased by 250 VND/kg, reaching 8,600 – 8,700 VND/kg.
  • CL 555 Rice:The sharpest increase was around 400 VND/kg, fluctuating between 9,000 and 9,200 VND/kg.
  • Finished IR 504 rice:Currently, the price remains above 10,000 VND/kg.

For the retail market, rice prices remained relatively unchanged. Nang Nhen rice continued to maintain the highest price at 28,000 VND/kg. Fragrant rice varieties such as Huong Lai and Japanese rice fluctuated between 20,000 and 22,000 VND/kg. Common rice varieties maintained prices ranging from 13,000 to 17,000 VND/kg depending on the type.

The position of Vietnamese rice in the international market.

In the export market, Vietnamese rice prices remain competitive across many segments. Jasmine rice is currently offered at around 496-500 USD/ton, while 5% broken rice is priced at nearly 490-500 USD/ton. The 100% broken rice segment fluctuates around 335-339 USD/ton.

Compared to major exporting countries, the price of 5% broken rice from Vietnam is significantly higher than that of Thailand (approximately 390-394 USD/ton) and India (approximately 349-353 USD/ton). This difference reflects the demand and high regard of the international market for the quality of Vietnamese rice during a period of declining domestic supply.
