From January 1st, 2026, domestic retail gas prices will increase uniformly by 1,583 VND/kg, bringing the price of a 12kg cylinder to a common level of 473,500 VND due to the impact of the global energy market.
On the very first day of the new year, January 1st, 2026, gas businesses simultaneously announced an increase in retail prices, following the upward trend in the global market. The increase was recorded at 1,583 VND/kg, equivalent to an increase of approximately 19,000 VND for a 12kg household gas cylinder.
Details of the gas price increase effective January 1, 2026
According to information from major gas distributors in the South, the retail price of gas for consumers from brands such as City Petro, VinaPacific Petro, Vimexco, etc., has officially been updated with a new price list. Specifically:
- 6kg cylinder:With an increase of 9,500 VND, the selling price will not exceed 266,500 VND.
- 12kg cylinder:With an increase of 19,000 VND, the common selling price is now 473,500 VND.
- 45kg cylinder:With an increase of 71,000 VND, the selling price is approximately 1,770,000 VND.
- 50kg cylinder:The highest price increase recorded was nearly 79,000 VND per bottle.
In the Hanoi area, Petrolimex Gas Corporation also announced the retail price of domestic gas (including VAT) at 426,384 VND/12kg cylinder, an increase of 14,884 VND compared to December 2025. For industrial gas cylinders of 48kg, the new price is 1,705,536 VND, an increase of 59,536 VND.
Reasons for the sharp reversal and increase in gas prices.
Explaining this adjustment, market experts said that the world gas price under contract (CP price) applicable for January 2026 has been finalized at an average of 522.5 USD/ton. This figure is 32.5 USD/ton higher than in December 2025.
Besides fluctuations in CP prices, transportation costs and geopolitical factors continue to put pressure on global energy supply. Because the domestic market remains heavily dependent on imports, any fluctuations in world prices and the USD/VND exchange rate directly impact domestic retail prices.
Energy market landscape in 2026
The sharp increase in gas prices at the beginning of 2026 is a notable development after a year of mostly downward trend in the gas market in 2025 (with 7 price reductions). The total reduction last year amounted to 51,500 VND/12kg cylinder, helping to alleviate the cost burden for consumers.
However, the current reversal trend indicates that the risk of fuel price volatility remains. This is expected to put further pressure on household living costs as well as input costs for manufacturing and food service businesses in the first quarter of 2026.
