Egypt's increase in industrial gas prices impacts the energy market.
According to Reuters, Egypt has increased natural gas prices for several energy-intensive industries starting in May, following a decree announced by the prime minister on Sunday. Prior to this, the Egyptian government had raised domestic fuel prices by up to 17% in March to counter soaring global energy costs.
The decree increased the average natural gas price by $2, reaching $14/million BTU for cement plants, $7.75 for the iron and steel, non-nitrogen fertilizer, and petrochemical industries, and between $6.50 and $6.75 for other industries. This price increase does not apply to consumers with existing gas supply contracts that include pre-set pricing formulas.
Egypt's energy import bill has more than doubled, and the cost of importing natural gas has nearly tripled since the US-Israel war with Iran broke out. The country is increasingly dependent on imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) or regional producers.
Egypt is seeking to reduce fuel and electricity subsidies under an $8 billion program agreed upon with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Developments in Egypt serve as an important benchmark for the global gas market, potentially impacting Vietnamese gas prices through the cost of imported LPG in future price adjustments.
