Domestic rice prices

Rice prices today, May 13, 2025, are showing mixed trends. While the prices of rice and related products have slightly increased, the price of paddy rice is trending downwards.

In the Mekong Delta region, raw rice prices at mills tend to increase slightly, especially for varieties such as 50404 and OM 380, due to scarce supply. However, paddy prices have adjusted downwards, and trading has been quite slow.

Observations in localities such as An Giang, Lap Vo (Dong Thap), Sa Dec and An Cu markets (Tien Giang) show that rice supplies are arriving gradually, and prices are stable. Good quality rice is being bought by warehouses at stable prices, while traders are buying slowly and there is little fluctuation in prices.

Specifically, the price of CL 555 raw rice increased by 100 VND/kg today, trading at 8,600 - 8,900 VND/kg. OM 380 is currently priced at 8,000 - 8,100 VND/kg; IR 504 at 8,200 - 8,400 VND/kg; OM 18 fluctuates from 10,200 - 10,400 VND/kg; Jasmine rice maintains the highest price, from 17,000 - 18,000 VND/kg.

At retail markets, rice prices remained largely unchanged. Popular fragrant rice ranged from 18,000 to 22,000 VND/kg; regular rice from 15,000 to 16,000 VND/kg; Thai fragrant rice from 20,000 to 22,000 VND/kg; Huong Lai rice maintained its price at 22,000 VND/kg; while Nang Nhen rice remained the most expensive, at 28,000 VND/kg.

For glutinous rice, the price of fresh IR 4625 glutinous rice remains at 7,700 - 7,900 VND/kg. Three-month dried glutinous rice fluctuates around 9,600 - 9,700 VND/kg; dried IR 4625 glutinous rice is at 7,900 - 8,000 VND/kg.

By-products showed a slight increase today. OM 5451 broken rice remained stable at around 7,350 - 7,450 VND/kg. Rice husk maintained its price at 1,000 - 1,150 VND/kg. Notably, rice bran increased by 100 VND, reaching 7,100 - 7,300 VND/kg, marking its highest level in the past three weeks.

Conversely, today's rice market saw slow trading and low supply. In An Giang, the early harvest of the summer-autumn rice crop resulted in slow purchasing and falling prices. In Kien Giang, rice prices remained relatively stable, but trading was subdued. Dong Thap and Long An were in a similar situation, with limited supply, cautious buying by traders, and slightly lower rice prices.

Specifically, in An Giang, the price of IR 50404 rice decreased by 200 VND, to 5,400 - 5,600 VND/kg; OM 5451 also decreased by 200 VND, to 6,000 - 6,200 VND/kg; OM 380 decreased by 100 VND, currently trading at 5,500 - 5,800 VND/kg. Meanwhile, varieties such as OM 18 (fresh), Dai Thom 8, and Nang Hoa 9 maintained stable prices, fluctuating from 6,550 - 7,000 VND/kg.

Export rice prices

According to the World Bank's forecast, international rice prices are likely to continue falling this year due to abundant global supply.

According to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), the export price of 5% broken rice is currently at US$397 per ton. 25% broken rice and 100% broken rice are trading at US$368 and US$323 per ton, respectively.

Compared to regional competitors, Thai rice of the same type saw a slight increase to $410/ton, becoming the highest price on the market currently. Meanwhile, rice prices from India and Pakistan showed contrasting trends, reaching $381 and $389/ton respectively.

The Philippines remains Vietnam's largest import market, with purchases reaching 1.12 million tons as of early May. Although the Philippines' total import volume decreased by more than 21% compared to the same period last year, the country began to recover imports in April.

The World Bank, in its latest report, stated that international rice prices are at their lowest level in over two years, with many varieties falling below $380 per ton. It forecasts that global rice prices could fall by as much as 29% in 2025 due to a sharp increase in production and India's easing of export restrictions.

Global rice production for the 2024-2025 season is projected to increase by 2%, with India alone seeing a 5% increase. The World Bank predicts rice prices will stabilize again in 2026, as supply and demand in the market become more balanced.

Vietnam currently remains a major exporter of rice to the Philippines and many other Asian countries. However, the prolonged downward trend in international prices will put pressure on domestic rice prices, thereby directly affecting farmers' incomes.

In the context of abundant global supply and fierce competition, Vietnam's rice industry needs to focus on improving product quality, optimizing production costs, and expanding markets to maintain sustainable growth.
