The Thai Rice Exporters Association forecasts rice exports to increase this year, despite recent flooding in the country.
The impact of the September floods on rice production is still unclear, but the main rice-producing areas in the northeast of Thailand have not been affected, said Chookiat Ophaswongse, president of the association. Chookiat estimated rice production this year at 33-34 million tonnes, up from 32 million tonnes last year.
Water availability for next year's rice planting is seen as a key factor, with the Bhumibol Dam currently holding only 71% of its maximum water capacity.
Rice cultivation in central Thailand is considered risk-free if there are no storms.
Thailand exported 7 million tonnes of rice in the first nine months of the year. Rice exports are expected to continue to increase due to current order demand and the impact of India's rice export ban.
However, there are concerns about competition in rice exports next year if India continues to export white rice. India has a price advantage over Thailand, and fluctuations in the baht could affect Thailand's competitiveness in the rice export market.
