Rice prices in the Mekong Delta remained stable on May 22nd. While OM 5451 raw rice held at 9,650 VND/kg, the fresh paddy market saw slow trading despite the early arrival of the summer-autumn crop.

According to the agricultural market update on May 22nd, rice prices in the Mekong Delta region remained largely unchanged compared to previous sessions. Although prices remained stable, purchasing power from traders and businesses was assessed as rather slow, reflecting a cautious sentiment amidst a lack of significant demand.

Prices of raw and finished rice remain stable.

In An Giang province and neighboring areas, the price of raw rice for domestic consumption and export remains stable. Specifically, popular rice varieties are being traded at the following prices:

Retail market and premium rice varieties

At retail markets, rice prices remained unchanged. Nang Nhen rice continued to hold its position as the highest-priced item, reaching 28,000 VND/kg. Fragrant rice and common white rice varieties remained stable.

  • Jasmine Rice:22,000 VND/kg.
  • Common white rice:16,000 VND/kg.
  • Fragrant rice (Thai long-grain rice, Nang Hoa rice, Taiwanese rice):20,000 – 22,000 VND/kg.
  • Regular rice:12,000 – 13,000 VND/kg.

The glutinous rice segment also saw no price changes. Fresh IR 4625 glutinous rice ranged from 7,300 to 7,500 VND/kg, while dried glutinous rice was commonly priced at 9,500 to 9,700 VND/kg.

The fresh rice market is showing signs of differentiation.

Although fresh rice prices in the Mekong Delta remained stable, the market showed slight differentiation across regions. In An Giang, Dong Thap, Can Tho, Vinh Long, and Ca Mau, farmers tended to offer higher prices, but actual transactions remained limited. Conversely, in Tay Ninh, purchasing power was weak due to weather conditions.

Major rice varieties such as OM 18 and Dai Thom 8 are currently priced between 6,500 and 6,700 VND/kg. OM 5451 is being purchased at 5,800-6,000 VND/kg, and IR 50404 is around 5,400-5,500 VND/kg. A small amount of early summer-autumn rice has begun to enter the market, but trading activity has not yet been significant.

Vietnamese rice export prices maintain a competitive position.

On the international market, Vietnamese rice continues to maintain high prices compared to its regional competitors. Jasmine rice is currently offered at around 525-529 USD/ton, fragrant rice with 5% broken grains at 510-520 USD/ton. Meanwhile, 100% broken rice remains at 336-340 USD/ton.

Compared to other exporting countries, the price of Thai 5% broken rice has increased by approximately $4/ton, reaching $426-$430/ton. Conversely, India maintains the lowest price level in the market, with 5% broken rice fluctuating between $342-$346/ton.
