Rice prices in the Mekong Delta remained stable on January 30th as the winter-spring crop began to be harvested sporadically. Trading was quiet, with prices for OM 18 and Dai Thom 8 rice remaining at 6,500 VND/kg.

Rice price trends in the Southwestern region of Vietnam.

According to an update from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of An Giang province, the price of fresh rice in the locality has not been adjusted. In general, the price level of rice remains stable in many provinces such as Can Tho, Dong Thap, and Vinh Long.

In key localities, the trading of winter-spring rice is slow. The low transaction volume is mainly due to the lack of a sudden surge in demand from export businesses.

Raw rice and retail market

Similar to paddy rice, the price of raw rice for export also remained stable. Raw IR 504 rice fluctuated around 7,650 – 7,750 VND/kg, while finished IR 504 rice commonly ranged from 9,500 – 9,700 VND/kg.

Notably, the prices of fragrant and high-quality rice varieties in the retail market remain high. Specifically:

  • Nang Nhen Rice:28,000 VND/kg (the highest price on the market).
  • Jasmine Rice:22,000 VND/kg.
  • Thai long-grain fragrant rice:20,000 – 22,000 VND/kg.
  • Jasmine rice:14,000 – 15,000 VND/kg.
  • Common white rice:16,000 VND/kg.

Export rice prices remain stable.

According to data from the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), Vietnamese export rice prices remained unchanged in this session. The 5% broken fragrant rice segment is currently trading around US$420-440 per ton. Jasmine rice maintained its price at US$446-450 per ton, while 100% broken rice reached US$319-323 per ton.

The domestic and export rice markets are expected to continue their stagnation phase, awaiting clearer signals regarding demand from international partners as well as the progress of the upcoming peak harvest of the Winter-Spring crop.
