Today's rice prices (January 8th) in the Mekong Delta region show mixed trends across different commodities. In key areas such as An Giang and Dong Thap, trading activity at rice warehouses is quite sluggish, with low supply.

Rice prices today, January 8th: The market is seeing contrasting fluctuations between raw rice and by-products.

Regarding rice, the supply of winter-spring rice to the market is still limited, resulting in sluggish trading activity. In An Giang, the price of fresh OM 18 and Dai Thom 8 rice is currently at 6,500 – 6,700 VND/kg. IR 50404 rice is recorded at 5,500 – 5,600 VND/kg, while OM 5451 fluctuates from 5,800 – 6,000 VND/kg and OM 34 is at 5,200 – 5,400 VND/kg.

By-product prices increased, while retail rice prices remained stable.

Contrary to the downward trend in raw rice prices, the prices of by-products continue to rise. Notably, the price of rice bran increased by approximately 300 VND/kg, reaching 7,050 – 7,200 VND/kg. Fragrant broken rice is currently fluctuating around 7,600 – 7,700 VND/kg, reflecting strong consumer demand for this product.

At local markets, retail rice prices remain unchanged compared to yesterday. Specifically:

  • Nang Nhen rice: 28,000 VND/kg (highest price).
  • Jasmine rice: 22,000 VND/kg.
  • Thai fragrant rice: 20,000 – 22,000 VND/kg.
  • Regular rice: 13,000 – 14,000 VND/kg.

Competitive pressure from Philippine inventory

On the export market, according to the Vietnam Food Association, Vietnamese rice prices continue to remain stable. White rice with 5% broken grains is offered at 364-368 USD/ton. Jasmine rice reaches 446-450 USD/ton, while fragrant rice with 5% broken grains fluctuates between 420-440 USD/ton. Compared to competitors, Thai rice is pegged at a higher level (401-405 USD/ton), while India and Pakistan are more competitively priced at 352-356 USD/ton and 356-360 USD/ton respectively.

A key factor impacting export prospects is the inventory situation in the Philippines. As of December 1st, rice inventories in the country reached approximately 2.7 million tons, an increase of nearly 6% compared to the same period last year. The Philippines' improved domestic supply and projected reduction in imports to 3.6-3.8 million tons by 2026 could create significant competitive pressure on rice exporting countries like Vietnam in the medium term.
