Why have global fertilizer prices fallen sharply?
The main reason for the sharp drop in global fertilizer prices is Iran's announcement that it is reopening the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping. This strait plays a vital role in the transit of approximately one-third of the world's crop nutrient supply.
The smooth operation of this route immediately eased concerns about supply shortages, bringing fertilizer prices down after a long period of tension.
The price of urea fertilizer has seen a record drop of approximately 18% in a short period. In the New Orleans market, the price of urea fell to $640 per ton from a peak of $780 per ton earlier this week.
According to Bloomberg data, despite the rapid price drop, the actual supply of physical goods will take approximately another month to arrive at ports and be transported to key agricultural production areas.
Domestic fertilizer prices are expected to continue falling in the coming months as cheaper imported shipments arrive. Governments are also working to help reduce input costs for farmers to boost spring crop production.
The stability of shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and a ceasefire in the Middle East will be key factors in keeping fertilizer prices sustainably low.
