Prices for Grade A Thai durian have seen a significant increase, reaching 140,000 VND/kg in the Mekong Delta region due to high export demand to China during the upcoming Tet holiday.

Today, January 20th, durian prices recorded a strong increase for Thai durian varieties, reaching a high of 140,000 VND/kg at warehouses in the Mekong Delta region. This fluctuation is occurring as the market enters its peak consumption period leading up to the Lunar New Year (Year of the Horse) and demand for exports to China increases, while supply from orchards is currently scarce.

For Ri6 durian, the purchase price at warehouses reaches over 70,000 VND/kg, helping farmers achieve a profit of approximately 30,000 VND/kg.

Reasons driving up prices

According to market experts, this price increase stems from two key factors:

  • Export demand:The Chinese market is increasing its purchases to meet consumer demand during the Lunar New Year holiday.
  • Limited supply:In Tien Giang and Dong Thap provinces, the area of durian trees ready for harvest is now limited, creating a situation where demand exceeds supply locally.

Notably, hydrological conditions in Dong Thap are improving as salinity levels in the Tien River are trending downwards. The ensured freshwater supply helps durian orchards develop stably, minimizing risks during the dry season and promising a more abundant supply for the period after Tet (Lunar New Year).

Forecasts indicate that from now until the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Horse, durian prices, especially for high-quality varieties intended for export, are likely to remain high or experience further slight upward adjustments.
