Trends in durian prices in key production regions.

In the Southwestern region of Vietnam, the price of premium RI6 durian is currently being purchased at around 55,000 – 60,000 VND/kg. For bulk purchases of RI6 durian, the price remains stable at around 25,000 – 28,000 VND/kg. Notably, Thai durian continues to hold the highest price position in the market, with premium selection ranging from 85,000 – 90,000 VND/kg, while bulk durian is commonly priced at 45,000 – 50,000 VND/kg.

In the Southeast region, prices are generally similar to those in the Mekong Delta, but there is a slight difference for Thai durian varieties. Specifically:

  • RI6 durian:Premium quality shrimp are priced from 55,000 to 60,000 VND/kg; lower quality shrimp are priced from 25,000 to 30,000 VND/kg.
  • Thai durian:Premium quality shrimp are priced from 75,000 to 85,000 VND/kg; lower quality shrimp are priced from 40,000 to 50,000 VND/kg.

In the Central Highlands provinces, the market is quieter as purchasing prices remain stable. High-quality RI6 durian ranges from 52,000 to 54,000 VND/kg, while lower-quality durian is priced at 25,000 to 30,000 VND/kg. Thai durian is cheaper here than in the other two regions, with high-quality durian around 72,000 to 74,000 VND/kg and lower-quality durian at 32,000 to 35,000 VND/kg.

Market causes and prospects

According to local traders, the main reason for the high price of durian is insufficient supply to meet demand. Currently, the area of durian trees ready for harvest in Tien Giang and surrounding areas is still limited, while China is continuously increasing imports to meet consumption needs during the Lunar New Year.

In the long term, supply is expected to be more abundant in the months following Tet (Lunar New Year) as areas treated for off-season flowering and fruiting begin to yield abundant harvests. In particular, the durian growing area in Dong Thap has rapidly increased to over 34,000 hectares, with approximately 14,800 hectares already granted planting area codes eligible for official export to China, promising to help the market gradually cool down and regain balance in the future.
