According to the General Department of Customs, in the first half of January 2025, Vietnam exported 7,313 tons of pepper with a total value of 48.3 million USD, a decrease of 3% in volume but an increase of 61.86% in value compared to the same period in 2024.

In many pepper-growing regions, farmers are feeling optimistic as pepper prices continue to rise sharply compared to the same period last year. However, sales remain low as many households expect prices to continue increasing in the coming days.

In 2025, global pepper production is projected to continue declining, while stable consumer demand is driving Vietnam's pepper exports this year.

Today's world pepper prices

On the world market, based on quotations from exporting companies and export prices in various countries, the International Pepper Association (IPC) has updated the prices of various types of pepper traded on the international market on February 12th (local time) as follows:

Indonesian Lampung black pepper prices rose slightly compared to yesterday, reaching US$7,265/ton (down 0.15%). Additionally, Muntok white pepper prices also increased slightly compared to yesterday, reaching US$10,028/ton (up 2.57%).

The price of Brazilian ASTA 570 black pepper remained unchanged from yesterday at $6,700 per ton (up 2.99%).

Malaysian ASTA black pepper prices remained stable compared to yesterday, currently at US$9,000/ton. Additionally, the price of ASTA white pepper from the same country also remained unchanged compared to yesterday, at US$11,600/ton.

Prices for all types of Vietnamese pepper remained stable compared to yesterday. Specifically, the price of Vietnamese black pepper (500 gr/l) reached US$6,500/ton; and the price of black pepper (550 gr/l) reached US$6,650/ton.

Similarly, the price of Vietnamese white pepper remained unchanged compared to yesterday at $9,550 per ton.

According to data from the Indian Ministry of Commerce, in the first 11 months of 2024, India's pepper exports reached 18,196 tons, a 30% increase compared to 2023. However, during the same period, the country also imported 43,879 tons of various types of pepper, a 37.8% increase.

Once the world's leading producer and exporter of black pepper, with 75% of its output exported in the 1980s, this figure has fallen to 40% in the last decade. Currently, domestic consumption accounts for over 80% of India's total pepper production, primarily due to trade liberalization policies.

Since 2000, there has been a significant shift in the composition of black pepper exports from India. Previously, the majority of exported pepper was unground pepper. Now, nearly 50% of the total value of India's black pepper exports comes from ground or milled pepper products.

The growth rate of black pepper exports has gradually slowed over the decades, while the growth rate of imports has increased. India's black pepper exports have become more diversified, showing a decline in the proportion of raw products and an increase in the proportion of value-added processed products.
