The 2025 pepper harvest in Vietnam concluded with a yield of 180,000 tons, 10,000 tons lower than in 2024. The main reason was the lack of expansion in pepper cultivation area during the past year. While the dry weather at the beginning of the year affected the pepper plants, the subsequent weather conditions improved, with no unseasonal rains or extreme weather events, creating favorable conditions for the next crop.
Mr. Le Viet Anh, Secretary General of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association, said that the weather in the Central Highlands is currently very suitable for pepper plants to flower. Thanks to this, the yield for the 2025-2026 crop could increase by about 10%, reaching 190,000-193,000 tons. However, he warned that this is only an initial forecast, as the weather can still change unexpectedly. Although high pepper prices are attracting farmers to invest, the expansion of pepper cultivation is limited due to land scarcity.
In recent years, the sharp increase in durian prices has led many households to switch from growing pepper to durian. Although durian prices have fallen this year, it is difficult for farmers to return to growing pepper because the durian trees are still in their growth phase. Coffee, with its current high price, continues to be a competitive option, making a return to growing pepper even more challenging.
Ms. Hoang Thi Lien, President of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association, believes that a slight increase in production will not put significant pressure on pepper prices. The land available for expanding pepper cultivation is limited, and farmers must weigh the benefits of growing pepper, coffee, or other crops. Therefore, the increase in supply is not large enough to cause a sharp drop in pepper prices.
Ms. Lien predicted that pepper prices would rise in the second half of 2025, thanks to demand for replenishing inventory in major markets such as the US. In the first half of the year, pepper exports slowed down, especially in the second quarter, due to tariff issues. Demand for pepper was suppressed, leading to shortages. Importers were forced to return to the market to secure supplies for their factories, helping the pepper market gradually become more active again.
