On April 17th, the 2025 Public-Private Partnership Conference for the Pepper Industry was held, organized by the Vietnam Pepper Association and...
The Vietnam Spice Plants Association (VPSA) conference was held in Ho Chi Minh City. At the conference, Mr. Le Viet Anh, Chief of the VPSA Office, stated that by the end of the first quarter of 2025, Vietnam had exported 47,660 tons of pepper, including 39,853 tons of black pepper and 7,807 tons of white pepper, earning 326.6 million USD.
Despite a 16.1% decrease in export volume compared to the same period last year, export value increased sharply by 38.6%. The average export price of black pepper reached US$6,711/ton and white pepper US$8,617/ton, increasing by 94.9% and 73.9% respectively.
The US continues to be the largest export market, accounting for 25% of total export value, and Vietnam remains the largest supplier of pepper to the US, accounting for 77% of the country's pepper imports. However, the pepper industry is facing a major challenge from the US's 10% import tariff policy.
According to Ms. Hoang Thi Lien, President of VPSA, some customers in the US have temporarily suspended purchases to reassess the situation. This tariff puts Vietnamese pepper at a disadvantage compared to products from Brazil and Indonesia.
During the 90-day temporary suspension of US tariffs, Ms. Lien recommended that businesses take advantage of the opportunity to ship goods as soon as possible. At the same time, they should proactively expand their markets to Europe, Asia, and the Middle East to reduce dependence on the US market should tariffs not be reduced after negotiations.
Furthermore, the pepper industry is also facing warnings about pesticide residue from China and the EU. VPSA advises businesses and farmers to change packaging and use uncolored drying tarpaulins to avoid the risk of chemical contamination.
The association will also periodically monitor and analyze residue trends and propose technical adjustments if necessary. In the long term, VPSA plans to implement a project to develop safe and sustainable pepper production and improve product quality.
