Global Pepper Trends Update - Third Week of May

According to IPC, during the third week of May (May 11-15, 2026), the global pepper market showed mixed but generally stable trends. Price fluctuations varied among major producing countries due to domestic market conditions, exchange rate fluctuations, and changing supply expectations.

In India, the market continued its downward trend for the third consecutive week as both domestic and export prices weakened due to negative market sentiment and cautious trading activity. This is a worrying trend for one of the world's largest consumers and producers of pepper.

Conversely, the Indonesian pepper market recorded an upward trend despite the Rupiah depreciating by about 1% against the USD. Market participants are monitoring expectations regarding the harvest in several producing regions starting in August – a factor that could affect future supply.

Malaysian domestic pepper prices have maintained a continuous upward trend over the past two weeks. Malaysian export prices have remained relatively stable, reflecting steady external demand and balanced export activity. In Sri Lanka, the pepper market continues to decline, with domestic prices falling after the Sri Lankan Rupee depreciated by approximately 1% against the US dollar.

In Vietnam, domestic and export pepper prices remained stable throughout the third week of the month. This signals that supply and demand factors are generally balanced and trading conditions are relatively stable. Brazil and Cambodia recorded continued increases in black pepper prices last week, while Chinese white pepper prices remained stable.

In terms of trade, Sweden's pepper imports in January 2026 reached 132 tons. India remained the largest supplier with 66 tons, followed by the Netherlands, Indonesia, Estonia, and Germany. This data highlights India's important role in the pepper supply chain for the Nordic market.
