Domestic pepper prices showed positive signs, increasing by 2000 VND/kg on August 26th. Notably, export turnover has stabilized and surpassed the 1 billion USD mark in just over half a month. This is an optimistic sign for farmers and businesses, affirming the important position of Vietnamese pepper on the world map.
With over 90% of its production destined for export, the pepper industry is highly dependent on fluctuations in the international market. Recently, businesses have continuously faced difficulties in key markets, such as stricter US tariffs and changes in European certification regulations. These issues have prompted the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA) to repeatedly petition for the removal of these barriers.
Overall, VPSA forecasts that pepper exports for the whole year of 2025 will decrease to 220,000 tons compared to 250,000 tons last year. However, thanks to high pepper prices, export revenue is still expected to reach approximately $1.4 billion. After deducting the 20% tax from the US market, the estimated net revenue will still reach $1.3 billion, equivalent to that of 2024.
Today's pepper prices (August 26th) on the world market.
On the world market, based on quotations from exporting companies and export prices in various countries, the International Pepper Association (IPC) has updated the prices of various types of pepper traded on the international market on August 25th (local time) as follows:
Indonesian Lampung black pepper prices rose sharply compared to yesterday, reaching US$7,307/ton (up 2.44%). Additionally, Muntok white pepper prices also increased significantly compared to yesterday, reaching US$10,155/ton (up 1.86%).
The price of Brazilian ASTA black pepper remained unchanged from yesterday at $6,000 per ton.
Malaysian ASTA black pepper prices remained unchanged from yesterday at US$9,600/tonne. Similarly, ASTA white pepper prices also remained unchanged from yesterday at US$12,800/tonne.
Prices for all types of Vietnamese pepper remained unchanged compared to yesterday. Specifically, the price of Vietnamese black pepper (500 gr/l) reached US$6,240/ton; and the price of black pepper (550 gr/l) reached US$6,370/ton.
Similarly, the price of Vietnamese white pepper remained unchanged from yesterday at $8,950 per ton.
According to the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), the 50% import tariff that the US plans to impose on Brazilian and Indian pepper will cause these two countries' market share in the US to decline. This presents an opportunity for Vietnamese pepper, with a 20% tariff, to enhance its competitiveness. Meanwhile, Indonesia, with a tariff of only 19%, is also predicted to significantly expand its market share.
The Import-Export Department forecasts that world pepper prices will increase in the second half of 2025. Although the market is currently temporarily stagnating due to complex tax policies and cautious buyer sentiment, demand from major markets such as the US is expected to surge again in Q4 2025 and Q1 2026.
With impressive price increases and export turnover exceeding expectations, Vietnam's pepper industry is on a path to sustainable development. Authorities recommend that farmers and businesses closely monitor market developments and apply advanced technology to improve productivity and quality, thereby maximizing opportunities from recovering global demand.
