According to data from the International Pepper Association (IPC), pepper prices in leading producing countries continued to remain stable in the latest trading session. Indonesian black pepper is currently quoted at US$6,966/ton, Brazilian ASTA 570 black pepper at US$6,100/ton, and Malaysian black pepper holds the top position at US$9,300/ton.
In Vietnam, export prices for black pepper remained stable at around US$6,100 – US$6,200 per ton for 500 g/l and 550 g/l grades. This price is on par with Brazil, approximately US$766 per ton lower than Indonesia, and US$3,100 – US$3,200 per ton lower than Malaysia.
At the same time of the survey, Indonesian Muntok white pepper was trading at US$9,178/ton. In Vietnam, the price of white pepper stood at US$9,000/ton, while Malaysia was the most expensive at US$12,200/ton. The price difference between Malaysian and Vietnamese white pepper was as much as US$3,200/ton, equivalent to 35.6%.
Vietnam's pepper exports surged in the first four months of 2026.
According to the latest report from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, in April 2026, Vietnam exported 29,000 tons of various types of pepper, earning $183.6 million. In the first four months of 2026, businesses exported a total of 95,100 tons of pepper, reaching a value of $614.4 million.
Vietnam's pepper exports increased sharply by 29.2% in volume and 20.9% in value compared to the same period in 2025, despite a 6.4% decrease in average price. This strong growth in volume indicates that demand for Vietnamese pepper remains very high in the international market, even with a slight cooling of the average export price.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the US, Germany, and Thailand are the three largest markets for Vietnamese pepper, with market shares of 29.8%, 6.6%, and 5.2% respectively. The US alone accounts for nearly 30% of total export value, solidifying its role as Vietnam's largest pepper customer for many years.
In the first quarter of 2026 alone, the value of pepper exports to the US increased by 54.2% compared to the same period last year, exports to Thailand doubled, while exports to Germany decreased by 11.8%. Among the top 15 export markets, Egypt saw the strongest growth, tripling in value.
In the first quarter of 2026, the US spent an average of $7,251 per ton to purchase 17,693 tons of Vietnamese pepper, which was $737 higher than the average export price of $6,514 per ton to other markets. This difference of approximately 11.3% shows that the US is willing to pay a higher price to ensure a stable supply.
For black pepper specifically, the average export price to the US reached $8,112 per ton, $669 higher than the average of $7,443 per ton exported to other markets. The US is not only the largest customer but also among the highest payers, second only to South Korea at $8,408 per ton.
In 2025, the US spent approximately $416.5 million to purchase 56,182 tons of Vietnamese pepper. The large order size and high purchase price make the US an irreplaceable strategic partner for Vietnam's pepper industry, especially given the cyclical fluctuations in world pepper prices.
With an average export price of US$7,251 per ton in the US market in the first quarter of 2026, each ton of pepper exported to the US brings Vietnamese businesses approximately VND 174 million (based on the reference exchange rate). This is the driving force that has helped domestic pepper prices maintain a level higher than the global average in recent trading sessions.
