Gold prices this afternoon, September 4th: SJC gold reaches a new record high, global prices fall.

World gold prices have risen to unprecedented levels.

As of 3:30 PM Vietnam time today, the world gold price reached $3,544.23 per ounce, an increase of 0.21%, equivalent to $7.59 per ounce, compared to yesterday.

World gold prices reversed course and fell slightly in this afternoon's trading session, after yesterday's sharp rise to a record high. The main reason is that investors took advantage of the peak to lock in profits.

Specifically, the spot gold price fell 0.21%. Meanwhile, the price of gold futures in the US for December also decreased by 1.1% to $3596.2 per ounce.

This decline occurred amidst strong market expectations that the Federal Reserve (Fed) would soon cut interest rates. In addition, investor sentiment was generally cautious as everyone focused on the crucial US jobs report to be released on Friday. This data is expected to provide clearer clues about the Fed's monetary policy path in the coming period.

According to one expert, this is merely a technical profit-taking move, and gold prices are still in an upward trend. Expectations of a Fed interest rate cut, along with concerns about the institution's independence, are predicted to continue driving demand for gold as a safe-haven investment.

Recent economic data further reinforces that expectation. The U.S. Department of Labor reported that the number of job openings in July fell more than expected. At the same time, many Fed officials have expressed concerns about the labor market and advocated for an early interest rate cut.

Gold typically benefits from low interest rate environments because it doesn't offer the same yield as other financial assets. One major bank forecasts that gold prices could even surpass $4,000 by mid-2026 if private investors flock to the metal, and they maintain a buy recommendation.

Furthermore, trade tensions have also contributed to instability. US President Donald Trump has stated that the country may have to cancel trade agreements with the European Union, Japan, South Korea, and others if it loses its case in the Supreme Court regarding reciprocal tariffs. This has raised concerns and prompted investors to seek safe-haven assets.

Alongside gold, spot silver prices edged down 0.8% to $40.85 per ounce, despite earlier reaching their highest level since 2011. Platinum fell 1% to $1,407.1 per ounce, and palladium also declined 0.8% to $1,138.11 per ounce.
