Converted using the USD exchange rate at Vietcombank (26,321 VND/USD), the world gold price is approximately 158.23 million VND/ounce (excluding taxes and fees). Thus, the price of SJC gold bars is currently 24.87 million VND/ounce higher than the world gold price.
The demand for gold among the public remains strong. At the Bao Tin Minh Chau store on Cau Giay Street (Hanoi), many people lined up from early morning to buy gold. Customers buying 4 taels or more had to receive an appointment slip and return on March 28th to pick up their gold.
High demand has also fueled a vibrant off-store gold trading market. In the free market, Bao Tin Minh Chau gold rings are being offered for sale at around 181.8 - 184.5 million VND/ounce, 1.8 - 4.5 million VND/ounce higher than the buying price at stores.
In the international market, the SPDR Gold Trust sold gold at the end of the week after two days of buying. Since the beginning of March, the fund has sold a net 29.76 tons of gold. In the most recent session alone, the fund sold 4.28 tons, leaving its gold holdings at 1,071.57 tons.
World gold prices have fallen by approximately $250 per ounce compared to the end of February, equivalent to a 4.7% decrease. Many investors have sold gold to switch to holding US dollars, preventing world gold prices from recovering.
