(Baonghean.vn) - Annoyed with her son over everyday issues, Pham Thi Huong conceived the idea of killing her granddaughter to take revenge on him. The grandmother, in her 60s, then lured her 11-year-old granddaughter to the water dam area and committed the heinous act.

On May 22nd, the Nghe An Provincial People's Court held a first-instance criminal trial to hear the case against Pham Thi Huong (born in 1953), residing in Hau Thanh commune (Yen Thanh district), for the crime of "murder". The victim in the case was her granddaughter, Nguyen Thi Thanh T. (born in 2008).

According to investigative documents, on the afternoon of November 3, 2019, after performing a ritual at the temple, Ms. Huong went to her sister's house to visit. At that time, Nguyen Duy Chung (Huong's son) arrived on his motorbike but did not greet his mother, which displeased Ms. Huong, who thought her son was sullen and stubborn towards her. Not wanting to see her son, Ms. Huong took her bicycle and left her sister's house.

At 1:30 PM that same day, Mrs. Huong was riding her bicycle to buy beer on credit to resell for profit when she met Nguyen Thi Thanh T. (Mr. Chung's daughter) riding an electric bicycle with her friends. T. greeted Mrs. Huong and said she was going to a friend's birthday party.

At 4 PM that same day, Pham Thi Huong met T. again. T. asked Huong if she needed a ride. Huong replied "no," so T. asked her grandmother to go to a relative's house. Huong agreed, so she left her bicycle and got on T.'s bike.

Later, on their way home, Mrs. Huong and her granddaughter T. talked about Mr. Chung. Mrs. Huong said, "Don't mention your father; it gives me a headache." But T. continued talking about her father, which angered Mrs. Huong, leading her to think, "If I can't discipline the father, I'll discipline the son."

At this time, T. drove her grandmother to the Bau Ganh dam in Hau Thanh commune. There, Mrs. Huong told T. she wanted to go into the dam to wash herself. Huong wanted T. to go with her to help wash herself. Because she already had the intention of killing T., Mrs. Huong tricked T. into going further inside the dam to avoid being seen.

While scrubbing Mrs. Huong's back, T. poked her armpit, causing Mrs. Huong to almost fall. Because she was angry with Mr. Chung, Mrs. Huong forcefully pushed T., causing the girl to fall into the water. Mrs. Huong also fell, but because she was closer to the edge of the dam, she managed to grab onto the stone embankment and climb back to shore. Pham Thi Huong sat on the bank looking down into the water for about 3 minutes but couldn't see her granddaughter, so she knew the child was dead and went home.

After killing her grandchild, Mrs. Huong remained calm as if nothing had happened, and even bought a bus ticket to Hanoi.

On November 4th, Mr. Chung's family filed a report about the disappearance of their child, T. On November 5th, 2019, Ms. Huong turned herself in to the police.

In court, the defendant initially denied the crime but later admitted to killing the child. The defendant requested a reduced sentence, and the victim's family also submitted a petition requesting leniency for Ms. Huong.

After considering all aspects of the case, the panel of judges sentenced the defendant Pham Thi Huong to 12 years in prison for the crime of "murder".
