Mr Aksyonov did not disclose the exact location of the rigs, but said they were owned by Chernomorneftegaz, a company that develops offshore oil and gas fields. Ukrainian energy giant Naftogaz has been fighting over the ownership of the company since 2014, when it was nationalized after Russia annexed Crimea.
According to Mr. Aksyonov, 3 missiles hit 3 oil rigs. At the time of the attack, there were 109 people in the area. The evacuation of workers is currently underway.
The Crimean Peninsula representative in the Russian Parliament, Olga Kovitidi, said that the attacked rigs were located about 71 km from the Ukrainian Port of Odessa.
Earlier, some Ukrainian media reported that dozens of missiles were fired at Snake Island, off the coast of Ukraine, which is currently controlled by Russian forces. However, Ukrainian MP Aleksey Goncharenko claimed that the missiles "attacked the gas rig" and not Snake Island.
