In the North Central region of Vietnam, especially in Nghe An province, rice production is constantly challenged by unpredictable weather: from severe cold spells at the beginning of the spring season to strong winds and thunderstorms at the end of the season. Therefore, a rice variety not only needs high yield but also must possess the resilience to withstand these conditions in order to thrive in the soil of this region.

Lam Thanh commune has just harvested the TBR125 pure rice variety from Thaibinh See Group. This summer-autumn crop of TBR 125 yielded a bountiful harvest; before the floods, the rice stalks were golden yellow and heavy with grains.

Standing beside his family's rice field, Mr. Tran Duc Thanh, one of the households directly producing TBR125 rice seeds in the area, said that since planting, his family's rice field has rarely been affected by pests and diseases, and the plants have developed quite uniformly.

“This is the first time I’ve planted the TBR125 rice variety, but the results exceeded expectations. This rice variety has strong stems and short stalks, making it very resistant to lodging. In addition, the rice field was less affected by pests and diseases, significantly reducing fertilizer, pesticide, and labor costs, while still achieving a yield of about 3.5 quintals per sao (approximately 350 kg per 1000 square meters),” Mr. Thanh shared.

According to Ms. Dinh Thi Le (40 years old, from Lam Thanh commune), despite many disadvantages this year's crop season, with heavy rains shortly after transplanting and strong winds during the ripening stage, as well as complex pest and disease outbreaks, especially stem borers and leaf rollers, with higher densities than the average of previous years, the TBR125 rice variety still yielded high productivity.

“The reality has proven the exceptional resilience of the TBR125 variety. During the heading and flowering stages, the rice fields continued to face a strong outbreak of leaf-rolling caterpillars. However, the rice variety maintained its superior resistance, significantly limiting damage from pests and diseases, and maintaining stable growth,” Ms. Le said.

Not only in Lam Thanh commune, the TBR125 is also being put into trial production and gradually expanded to several other localities in the province.

During the 2026 Summer-Autumn crop season, the TBR125 rice variety was planted on an area of ​​0.5 hectares in Yen Thanh commune. Based on actual production results, the model yielded superior results in terms of productivity and disease resistance compared to other commonly grown varieties in the area.

Mr. Nguyen Van Dinh - Director of Hoa Thanh Agricultural Service Cooperative (Yen Thanh commune) assessed that the TBR125 rice variety grows very well, shows no signs of pests or diseases, tolerates heat well, and the estimated yield ranges from 3-3.5 quintals/acre.

“This is the first time the cooperative has introduced TBR125 into production. This rice variety not only yields high productivity but also helps reduce investment costs thanks to its resistance to pests and diseases. In the upcoming Winter-Spring crop season, the cooperative will expand the area planted with TBR125, combining it with the application of advanced techniques to increase economic efficiency for farmers,” Mr. Dinh said.

The key to adapting to climate change.

In recent years, agricultural production in Nghe An has been significantly impacted by increasingly complex weather patterns. Prolonged heatwaves, heavy rains, storms, and tornadoes occur with unpredictable intensity, increasing the risk of crop damage and placing greater demands on seed selection.

Entering 2026, in addition to productivity requirements, localities are also paying more attention to crop varieties that can adapt to unfavorable conditions, thereby limiting the impact of weather and maintaining production efficiency. This is also one of the criteria considered when introducing new rice varieties for testing and production.

TBR125 is a proprietary pure rice variety of ThaiBinh Seed, recognized for circulation by the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection under Decision No. 146/QD-TTTV-QLGCT dated November 7, 2025. The variety belongs to the temperature-sensitive group and is intended for production in the North Central region and the Red River Delta. The growing season in the Winter-Spring and Spring crops is 123-140 days; in the Summer-Autumn and Monsoon crops, it is 99-108 days.

In terms of morphological characteristics, the TBR125 rice variety has a plant height of 101.5-113.7 cm, a fairly strong stem, and good lodging resistance. Trial results show that the variety has relatively good resistance to some pests and diseases, notably blast, bacterial leaf blight, and brown planthopper. The compact foliage and vigorous plant growth also create good aeration in the field, thereby contributing to limiting conditions for pest and disease outbreaks and reducing the need for pesticides.

In Nghe An province, the TBR125 rice variety was initially tested in small areas and then gradually expanded to production in many localities. From Yen Thanh and Lam Thanh communes to Quy Hop and other areas, the planted area has tended to increase over the seasons. The fact that farmers continue to choose the variety after directly cultivating it also serves as a basis for evaluating its adaptability and effectiveness under actual production conditions.

With the weather continuing to be unpredictable, structuring rice varieties capable of adapting to adverse conditions will contribute to reducing risks for producers and improving crop stability. The initial results of TBR125 in Nghe An province are providing further basis for localities to continue monitoring and evaluating the variety, aiming to select varieties suitable for production conditions and the requirements of safe and sustainable agricultural development.
