The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency said it found two young men who had illegally crossed the U.S. border on Thursday, July 21.
Both were walking and claimed they were "not paying attention to their surroundings" as they were glued to their phone screens playing the globally popular game Pokémon GO.
Michael Rappold, a spokesperson for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, said: "These two teenagers were engrossed in the game Pokémon Go and didn't know where they were."
The two men detained were brothers from Alberta, Canada. Fortunately, both boys were underage, so they did not face any penalties. Officials said that both have now returned to Canada to be reunited with their family.
Pokémon GO is currently the most popular augmented reality game on smartphones worldwide. Players walk around and use their smartphones to catch virtual Pokémon. Therefore, if players are too engrossed in their phone screens, accidents can easily happen. Pokémon GO is expected to be available in Vietnam at the end of this month.
