The Russian fleet will conduct exercises in the South China Sea.

According to TASS, on March 31, Roman Martov, spokesman for the Eastern Military District (Russia), announced that ships of the Pacific Fleet will participate in the ADMM-PLUS 2016 international counter-terrorism and maritime security exercise in the South China Sea next May.

"The ships of the Pacific Fleet will participate in this exercise for the first time," said Mr. Martov. "The ADMM-PLUS 2016 naval exercise involves nearly 30 countries in the Asia-Pacific region."

During the exercise, Russian sailors from the group of ships will patrol the area and conduct a joint operation to search for and rescue a ship hijacked by a hypothetical terrorist group. He added that after the ship is rescued, a joint unit will escort it back to port.

The anti-submarine destroyer Admiral Vinogradov, the rescue tug Fotiy Krylov, and the tanker Irkut will be part of the Pacific Fleet's group of ships participating in the exercise.

As part of this exercise, Russian sailors also plan to visit the ports of Singapore and Brunei.
