(Baonghean.vn) - On March 20, the People's Court of Nghe An province held the first-instance trial of the case of "Illegal transportation of narcotics" against Luong Thi Lo (born in 1981) and Luong Thi Duyen (born in 1993), both residing in Muong Ngoc commune, Que Phong district, Nghe An province.

According to the indictment, more than 10 years ago, while working in Gia Lai province, Luong Thi Lo became acquainted with a man named Tuan (whose background and address are unknown). Lo returned to her hometown to live and start a family, but still maintained contact with Tuan.

In mid-2023, Tuan contacted Lo and invited him to visit. After staying for a few days, Lo returned to his hometown. On August 5, 2023, Tuan called Lo and asked him to pick up some drugs, promising him 10 million VND as payment, and also provided the contact information for the delivery person.

On August 9, 2023, Lơ and an unidentified Hmong man contacted each other and agreed on a time and place for the drug handover. Lơ invited his niece (his brother's daughter), Lương Thị Duyên, to go with him to receive the drugs.

When the two women arrived at the drug delivery location, the delivery person changed the address. Lơ told Duyên to follow the other person's instructions. This person said the drugs would be placed in a sack and dumped by the roadside to avoid detection by law enforcement.

Duyen followed the directions, found a sack with the characteristics described above, put it in the basket of her motorbike, disguised it in her jacket, and took it home. While Duyen was traveling on the road, she was discovered and caught red-handed by law enforcement with 3.8 kg of opium resin. Luong Thi Lo was also arrested shortly afterward.

At the trial, the two defendants admitted to the crimes as charged in the indictment. Both Luong Thi Lo and Luong Thi Duyen claimed that they committed the crimes due to limited legal awareness and momentary greed.

The trial panel determined that in this case, Luong Thi Lo was the instigator and therefore should bear a higher level of criminal responsibility. Both defendants confessed honestly, showed remorse, and had many achievements and contributions to local sports activities, receiving numerous commendations and certificates of merit. These are mitigating circumstances according to the law.

After considering all aspects of the case, the trial court sentenced Luong Thi Lo to 16 years in prison and Luong Thi Duyen to 10 years in prison for the crime."Illegal trafficking of narcotics".
