The agreement to purchase an additional 24 MH-60R helicopters will triple South Korea's anti-submarine warfare fleet, amid North Korea's development of Russian-technology submarines.

South Korea has just reached an agreement to purchase an additional 24 MH-60R Seahawk helicopters from the United States, with an estimated total value of approximately $3 billion. This move aims to triple the size of its most advanced anti-submarine helicopter fleet, in order to directly counter the development of North Korea's nuclear and conventional submarine fleet, as well as China's stealth submarines.

Details of the $3 billion military equipment package.

According to the sales authorization from the U.S. State Department, this agreement includes not only 24 MH-60R helicopters but also a comprehensive additional equipment package. Specifically, the package includes 24 low-frequency underwater sonar systems, eight M240D 7.62mm machine guns, and 52 anti-tampering navigation and guidance systems.

In terms of technical capabilities, these aircraft will be equipped with T700-GE-401D engines, APS-153(V) multi-function radar, friend-or-foe identification systems, and advanced targeting and communication equipment. In addition, the contract also includes countermeasures, threat warning systems, spare parts, and intensive personnel training programs.

Comparing operating costs and efficiency.

Notably, the projected price for South Korea is somewhat more favorable compared to some other partners. For example, Norway received a license to purchase six MH-60R helicopters in 2023 for $1 billion, equivalent to a higher price per helicopter than the South Korean contract. This difference is explained by the different equipment configurations, specifically the MIDS JTRS communication system operating on Link 16 in Norway's order.

This is the second time South Korea has ordered this type of helicopter. Previously, in 2020, Seoul ordered 12 helicopters for $878 million. The addition of 24 new helicopters will bring the total fleet to 36, significantly strengthening the navy's combat capabilities.

Pressure from Russian and North Korean submarine technology.

The MH-60R squadron's primary mission is anti-submarine warfare in the context of a complex regional security situation. North Korea is currently actively investing in nuclear submarines using technologies acquired from Russia, while also accelerating the construction of new conventional submarines.

Simultaneously, the presence of new-generation stealth submarines from China has also prompted South Korea to urgently upgrade its underwater surveillance and target destruction capabilities. The MH-60R Seahawk, with its maneuverability and sensitive sensor system, is considered the optimal solution for this defense strategy.
