South Korea is increasingly concerned about the threat of attacks from North Korean drones, and plans to acquire a new type of precision weapon capable of detecting, tracking and shooting down small flying objects, according to a South Korean defense official.
South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) has now begun a project to develop technology for laser weapons. The Agency for Defense Development (ADD) has assigned Hanwha Defense Systems to test the capabilities of weapons development units participating in the project.
Based on the results of the research and development, the Defense Capability Development Agency will decide whether South Korea will develop its own air defense system. If it cannot develop its own, South Korea will import air defense systems from abroad to counter North Korea's drones.
Currently, South Korea can detect low-flying North Korean objects and use surface-to-air missiles or anti-aircraft guns to shoot them down.
South Korea decided to develop a new air defense system after its military failed to shoot down North Korean drones that crossed the military demarcation line between the two Koreas five times.
