Tens of thousands of tons of cassava starch in Nghe An province are stockpiled, with sales stalled.
Currently, as the cassava harvest season draws to a close, many cassava starch processing plants in Nghe An are facing unprecedented sluggish sales.

In early April 2025, we visited the Thanh Chuong cassava starch processing plant (Thanh Chuong district) and easily observed a large inventory of cassava starch.
According to a factory representative, they currently have an inventory of approximately 5,000 tons of cassava starch, with over 2,000 tons stored in the warehouse and 3,000 tons covered with tarpaulins and left outdoors due to warehouse capacity limitations.
The price of cassava starch has also dropped sharply compared to the beginning of the season. Previously, the selling price reached 13 million VND/ton, but now it is only 8.5-9 million VND/ton. However, even at this low price, the market has not seen much positive change. Sales are almost completely frozen.

The situation is not unique to the factory in Thanh Chuong; a similar problem is occurring at the Hoa Son cassava starch factory in Hoa Son commune, Anh Son district. Over 15,000 tons of starch are stockpiled, with more than 10,000 tons forced to be stored outdoors due to lack of storage space. A factory representative stated: Although cassava starch is difficult to sell, they still have to purchase all the fresh cassava from the farmers, otherwise it will spoil.
Similarly, in Nghia Dan district, one of the areas with a large cassava cultivation area in Nghe An province, some establishments there have had to reduce production due to the inability to sell their products.

Currently, cassava starch products are unsaleable, with inventories piling up, prices plummeting, yet there is still no market. This situation is causing great concern among both cassava producers and farmers in Nghe An province.
The main reason for this situation is that the Chinese market – the primary consumer of Vietnamese cassava starch – is experiencing a sharp decline in imports.
