Transit goods from Laos at Nghe An seaport have increased sharply.
(Baonghean.vn) - In 2018, the volume of transit goods from Laos through seaports in the North Central region gradually increased and is expected to grow in the coming time. Transit goods from Laos are usually shipped by large vessels with a size of 20,000 DWT - 60,000 DWT.
According to Nghe Tinh Port, in 2018, fertilizer shipments through the port reached 265,271 tons, an increase of 20.84% compared to the same period in 2017. This was due to the expansion of the KaiYan potassium fertilizer plant in Laos into its export market and other domestic businesses focusing on importing goods because of increased domestic market demand, thus contributing to the growth of this commodity through the port.
Container cargo volume reached 1.2 million tons, a 23% increase compared to 2017. This increase in container volume was driven by the influx of potassium from Laos, which was being transported in containers to Hai Phong for international export. Previously, this cargo was being shipped through ports in Thailand.
In 2018, additional barite ore transited from Laos for export to the Middle East and the US markets was added to the list of goods. The volume of this commodity passing through the port reached 213,265 tons.

However, according to the latest maritime notice, the current channel depth of Cua Lo Port is only 6.5m, preventing large ships from entering and exiting, which has significantly impacted the attraction of goods from Laos.
In the first 11 months of 2018, the volume of goods handled through Nghe Tinh Port reached over 3.3 million tons, an increase of 0.3% compared to the same period in 2017 and achieving 83% of the 2018 plan. Of this total: exports reached 970,982 tons; transit goods reached 388,637 tons, an increase of 294%; imports reached 102,232 tons, an increase of 14%; domestic goods reached nearly 1.9 million tons; and container cargo reached 69,626 TEU, equivalent to 1.2 million tons, an increase of 23.2% compared to the same period in 2017.
In 2018, the projected cargo throughput at Nghe Tinh port is over 3.6 tons; revenue is expected to reach 175,449 million VND.
