Thousands of people including students, family and friends came to visit teacher Van Nhu Cuong.
At 9:30 a.m. on October 12, many generations of students gathered in the courtyard of the Ministry of National Defense Funeral Home (5 Le Thanh Tong, Hanoi) to attend the funeral of Associate Professor Van Nhu Cuong. Outside the courtyard, a large screen showed photos of the life and work of the teacher devoted to his students.
Students held up signs of each course to gather friends to pay their respects. Associate Professor Van Nhu Cuong, born in 1937 in Quynh Doi village (Quynh Luu, Nghe An), passed away early on October 9 after 3 years of fighting liver cancer.
With over 50 years of teaching at both university and high school, Mr. Van Nhu Cuong has hundreds of thousands of students. Each student who comes to visit pins their teacher's picture on their chest.
At 10:30, the funeral began. Many students in Luong The Vinh school uniforms were the first to pay their respects to the teacher. Mr. Cuong was the principal of Luong The Vinh school for 25 years, and later served as Chairman of the school's Board of Directors.
Professor, People's Teacher Ngo Thuc Lanh, who taught Associate Professor Van Nhu Cuong, leaned on his cane to the coffin to say goodbye to his student. In addition to teaching mathematics, Mr. Cuong was also known for his literary talent, poetry, and inspirational opening speeches for his students. He often debated hot issues in education.
"In 1955, after graduating from Hanoi Pedagogical University, Mr. Cuong practiced and taught in my class, which was the third grade (grade 9 at that time, equivalent to grade 12 now) of Trung Vuong - Dong Khanh girls' school, class of 1951-1958. Later, he became the son-in-law of the class, so the whole class has many memories with him," said Ms. Tran Thuy Lan, Principal of Chu Van An School.
The room where the funeral was held was so packed at times that it was impossible to move.
Mrs. Kim Oanh, wife of Mr. Van Nhu Cuong, could not stand and had to sit down on a chair to greet the visitors.
Teacher Nguyen Thi Dan (Khuong Dinh) said while crying when looking at the teacher's portrait: "Goodbye teacher, I will miss you forever."
Grade 11 students cried as they walked past the coffin of the teacher of many generations of Luong The Vinh High School students.
In the condolence book, Hanoi Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung wrote: "Respectfully pay respects to Associate Professor Van Nhu Cuong. The Associate Professor has made many great contributions to the education of the capital and the country. The Associate Professor will forever be an exemplary role model for many generations of students of the capital and the country."
It was 12 noon, but the stream of visitors was still flowing. That same afternoon, the remains of Mr. Van Nhu Cuong will be brought back to be cremated at Van Dien Universal Crematorium.
