According to the BBC, spider crabs migrate to the southern waters of Australia every year when the sea water becomes cooler.

Marine biologist Sheree Marris captured images of spider crabs in Port Phillip Bay to draw attention to the diverse marine life in the area.

The exact reason for spider crabs’ large swarming behavior is unknown, but scientists speculate it may be related to molting. When spider crabs shed their hard outer shells to grow, they become vulnerable to predators such as cormorants and rays. Gathering in large numbers increases the safety of the group.
