Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD is discussing options to join F1, such as supplying powertrains or owning a racing team, taking advantage of new technical regulations from 2026.

BYD, the world's largest electric vehicle manufacturer, is actively considering joining Formula 1 (F1). This information has been confirmed by senior company executives, marking a strategic move to test advanced electrification technologies in the most demanding high-speed environments, while simultaneously elevating the brand's international standing.

Scenarios for joining the most prestigious race on the planet.

In an interview at the Beijing Auto Show, Executive Vice President Stella Li revealed that BYD had held preliminary discussions with the F1 organizers. Notably, Ms. Li met with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali in Shanghai to discuss potential future collaborations.

Accordingly, BYD is currently considering three main options for its presence in this racing series:

  • Owns a racing team:Become an independent entity to participate in the competition.
  • Drive system supplier:Develop and supply electric motor systems for existing racing teams.
  • Strategic partners:Join as a major sponsor to promote the brand.

Stella Li emphasized that participating in F1 is a valuable opportunity to put the company's self-developed technologies to the highest level of real-world testing.

Compatibility with F1's electrification roadmap from 2026

BYD's interest in F1 has increased significantly since the racing series announced changes to its technical regulations starting in 2026. Accordingly, racing cars will see a substantial increase in the proportion of power from electric motors, aiming for net zero emissions. This aligns strongly with BYD's core strengths in electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

However, the biggest challenge the company must consider is the enormous investment cost inherent in this high-speed sport. Maintaining a budget for an F1 racing team requires careful calculation of economic efficiency versus the media and technological value it brings.

Leading position in the global electric vehicle market.

Founded in 1995, BYD has undergone a spectacular development journey to become a leading multinational corporation in clean energy. By 2025, the company's sales reached 4.6 million vehicles, officially surpassing Tesla to become the world's number one electric vehicle manufacturer.

Although still in the discussion stage and no final decision has been made, BYD's ambition to join F1 shows that it's not just about sales targets, but also about conquering technological heights and asserting the strength of the Chinese automotive industry on the world map.
