According to the World Health Organization, epithelial ovarian cancer is the most common ovarian cancer today and the survival rate is about 40% within 5 years. The majority of patients (80%) will relapse after chemotherapy. That is why experts are looking for a more effective form of treatment.
Recently, researchers at Kamumoto University in Japan have discovered a compound found in onions, called Onionine A. According to them, it possesses anti-ovarian cancer activities.
Research published in Scientific Reports shows: “This compound reduces the progression of malignant ovarian tumors by interfering with the tumor-specializing function of myeloid cells.” On the other hand, experts also assert: “Onionine A can improve the effectiveness of anti-cancer drugs by increasing the ability to inhibit tumor proliferation.”
Also in an experiment conducted on mice, experts showed: “Ovarian tumors decreased and the life span of mice increased”. They also concluded that: “Onionine A in onions can replace complementary treatment for ovarian cancer patients”. This has really opened up treatment opportunities for ovarian cancer patients.
