The Cheongung-II missile system has demonstrated impressive interception performance against large-scale attacks, affirming the position of South Korean defense technology in the Middle East region.
South Korea's domestically produced Cheongung-II air defense system has demonstrated superior combat effectiveness, achieving a target interception rate of approximately 96% in large-scale attacks targeting the UAE. This information was confirmed by Yu Yong-weon, a member of the National Defense Committee of the South Korean National Assembly, based on actual data from the region.
Actual combat performance in the Middle East
According to Yu Yong-weon, Cheongung-II is becoming a formidable counterweight to defense systems developed by the US and Israel. In recent complex attacks, including a combination of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and ballistic missiles with irregular trajectories, maintaining an overall interception rate above 90% is considered a rare achievement in modern air defense warfare.

Statistics show that approximately 60 interceptor missiles have been launched from the two Cheongung-II systems deployed in the UAE to counter threats. Besides the UAE, other Middle Eastern countries such as Saudi Arabia and Iraq have also put this system into combat service.
Technical characteristics and interception technology
Cheongung-II, also known as the Medium-Range Air Defense Missile System (M-SAM), is the backbone of South Korea's missile defense network. According to its developer, LIG Nex1, the system possesses advanced technical characteristics:
- Interception technology:Using a "hit-to-kill" method, the target is destroyed by kinetic energy impact instead of traditional fragmentation warheads.
- Speed and altitude:The missile can reach speeds of nearly Mach 5, intercepting ballistic missiles at an altitude of approximately 20 km.
- Operational scope:For aircraft or cruise missiles, the range is approximately 50 km.
- Unit structure:Each battery consists of 4-6 mobile launchers (8 missiles/launcher), a multi-function radar, and a command and control vehicle.
Role in a multi-layered defense network
In the UAE battlefield, Cheongung-II serves as an intermediate-layer defense system, supporting long-range systems such as Patriot. This coordination optimizes the ability to protect critical infrastructure against cruise and ballistic missile attacks in the terminal phase.
With its ability to detect, track, and destroy multiple targets simultaneously thanks to its multi-functional radar and precision seekers, Cheongung-II is proving highly mobile and effective in protecting strategic locations from airborne threats.
