The US Yellow Dome missile defense system could cost $1.2 trillion.
The U.S. Congressional Budget Office estimates that the space interceptor layer accounts for 60% of the Yellow Dome project's budget, requiring a network of 7,800 continuously operating satellites.
According to the latest report from the U.S. Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the multi-layered Yellow Dome missile defense system is expected to cost approximately $1.2 trillion to develop, deploy, and operate over 20 years. Of this, the space-based interceptor layer is identified as the most expensive component, accounting for about 60% of the total program cost.

Space interception projects account for a large portion of the budget.
The CBO estimates that space defense alone will account for approximately 70% of the total projected $1 trillion procurement budget. This figure is many times higher than the $185 billion estimate previously provided by the Yellow Dome Office for its 10-year plan. This difference stems from the enormous scale of the satellite network required to ensure operational capability.
To effectively intercept an attack of 10 missiles launched simultaneously, the U.S. would need to maintain approximately 7,800 satellites in low Earth orbit (300-500 km). Because these satellites constantly orbit the Earth, the system requires a large number to ensure a constant supply of interceptor missiles near potential launch sites. The goal is to approach and destroy the target during its acceleration phase, which lasts only 3-5 minutes while the enemy missile's engine is still running.
Challenges in maintaining and operating a satellite network.
Besides the initial investment costs, maintaining the satellite network faces numerous technical challenges. At low orbital altitudes, atmospheric drag causes satellite orbits to degrade rapidly, limiting their operational lifespan to approximately 5 years. To maintain a fleet of 7,800 satellites, the US would have to launch approximately 1,600 replacement satellites annually, equivalent to 30,000 launches over two decades.
Even if the cost of launching satellites is optimized down to $500/kg thanks to new generations of heavy-lift rockets, the average cost per satellite would still be around $22 million. This creates enormous financial pressure on the US defense budget in the long term.
Ground components and deployment roadmap
Beyond its space-based layers, the Golden Dome system also includes critical ground-based defense infrastructure:
- Point defense area:Thirty-five areas are projected to cost $187 billion to intercept cruise missiles and hypersonic weapons.
- Large-scale defense infrastructure:The upper and lower-level facilities cost $46 billion and $29 billion, respectively.
- Tracking system:A separate satellite constellation dedicated to target surveillance is estimated to be worth $90 billion.
- Research and development:Approximately $92 billion is allocated for the overall system integration.
The US government aims to complete the entire system before the end of President Donald Trump's term in 2029. In 2025, Congress approved an initial budget of $25 billion. The Pentagon is also proposing an additional $17 billion for the next fiscal year to accelerate testing. Currently, leading aerospace companies such as Lockheed Martin and SpaceX have received multi-billion dollar contracts to develop prototype space-based interceptor systems.
