The new generation S-500 missile system makes the US Patriot missile 'take off its hat'

The US Patriot PAC-3 missile is no match for this weapon system because it only has a range of 40 km and an altitude of 20 km, while the Russian S-500 has a range of 600 km and an altitude of up to 100 km.

In an interview with Sputnik radio, Russian military expert Viktor Baranets praised Russia's new generation S-500 Prometey missile system, which is in the final testing phase, for its unprecedented destructive capabilities.

Recently, chief engineer of the Russian defense corporation Almaz-Antey, Mr. Pavel Sozinov, said that Russia's new generation S-500 surface-to-air missile system is capable of attacking targets in the upper atmosphere, 100 km above the Earth's surface.

The S-500, designed by Almaz-Antey, has a range of up to 600 km and is capable of destroying up to 10 ballistic and hypersonic missile targets traveling at speeds of up to 7 km/s.

Speaking to Sputnik, expert Viktor Baranets pointed out the “unique” features of the S-500 Prometey. “The S-500 is capable of intercepting targets at altitudes of up to 100 kilometers above the ground, which is actually the altitude of near space. The final tests of the system will take place at one of the largest training grounds in Kazakhstan, since the effective range of the S-500 is 600 kilometers. No other surface-to-air missile system in the world has such a destructive radius,” Baranets said.

According to Mr. Baranets, the S-500 system is also designed to destroy the warheads of hypersonic missiles. He asserted that according to its characteristics, the S-500 will significantly surpass the S-400 and will be more powerful than its American counterpart, the Patriot missile system (PAC-3).

Comparing the S-500 with other missiles, Russian experts said that the S-400 destroys targets within a range of 400 km and an altitude of 60 km, while the S-500 has a range of 600 km and an altitude of 100 km. The US Patriot missile has the disadvantage of a maximum range of 40 km and an altitude of 20 km.

Previously, Russia's Zvezda news network assessed the S-500 Prometey missile system as not only Russia's next-generation missile system, but also a package of measures aimed at turning Russia's air defense system into a single information space.

According to Zvezda, “it can now be said that Russia has created the world's first multi-stage air defense system, which will definitely protect the country from massive missile strikes.”
