Indonesia's efficient rapid bus system.

For nearly 13 years, Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, has implemented an effective solution to its worst traffic congestion in the world: the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.

The BRT system in Jakarta, known as TransJakarta, was launched in 2004 to create a convenient and affordable public transportation system and encourage people to reduce their use of private vehicles, thereby contributing to traffic congestion reduction, especially during peak hours.

Currently, the entire city of Jakarta has over 500 buses operating during the common hours of 5 am to 10 pm, with some special routes even running 24/7. TransJakarta has "covered" all areas of the capital, including 12 main routes with over 200 stops. Each bus can carry up to 80 passengers, although it only has 30 seats but a fairly spacious standing area.

The bus stops in this system are located on the same side as the dedicated lanes, connected by pedestrian walkways, and each stop is connected to a system of overpasses. All stops are built elevated, about 1 meter above the road surface, in accordance with the design of the buses in the TransJakarta system. This design also ensures that buses cannot pick up or drop off passengers along the route.

In reality, traffic conditions in Jakarta show that the large, double-chamber buses in the TransJakarta system are most efficient during peak hours because they are designed with dedicated lanes and high dividers, preventing other vehicles from encroaching. Furthermore, the fines for vehicles encroaching on bus lanes are very high, which contributes to the bus system's effectiveness during peak hours.
