The danger of unsafe cars

A series of extremely cheap car models launched recently contain hidden dangers, as they have been proven to be unable to protect the people sitting inside.

In a recent Global NCAP crash test, the Renault Duster shocked the world by scoring the lowest possible score: zero stars. The car tested was the base model sold in India, lacking many amenities and not equipped with airbags.

Cheap cars currently sold in the Indian market have basic configurations that lack many amenities and are not equipped with airbags.

"It is worrying that we have once again had a zero-star rating for a car on the road in India. Renault makes the Duster for many markets around the world, but the one for India has a very poor safety score," said David Ward, Secretary General of Global NCAP.

After the results were announced, the French carmaker asked NCAP to retest another version of the Duster, this time with an airbag for the driver, and the car achieved 3 stars for adult protection. However, the child protection score remained at 2 stars, like the original.

Experts are still investigating the safety of the Duster, after discovering that the airbags on the Indian version are smaller than those on the South American version, which received a four-star rating from Latin NCAP. Mr. Ward added: "If Renault had equipped the same type of airbags on all markets, the scores would certainly be more consistent."

With this result, Renault Duster becomes the next name to join the list of models that have been given 0 stars by NCAP in their most basic configuration. These include Renault Kwid; Suzuki Maruti Alto, Swift, Celerio and Eeco; Hyundai Eon and i10; Volkswagen Polo; Ford Figo; Datsun Go; Mahindra Scorpio; Chevrolet Enjoy; Tata Zest and Nano. Notably, most of them are being widely promoted at extremely cheap prices.

Thus, the suspicion that consumers have about cheap car models is completely grounded. Manufacturers themselves also understand that in exchange for low prices, they are forced to cut down on features, both in terms of comfort and safety. But this time it seems that the limit is being pushed too low.
