Every Sunday morning, residents of block 13, Truong Thi ward gather at the block’s cultural house with bags of sorted trash from their homes to bring to the collection point. Here, members of the block’s women’s association are present to receive the residents’ recyclable trash.
Mr. Tran Ngoc Vinh in block 13, Truong Thi ward shared: “Previously, all household waste was brought out to be placed in front of the house waiting for the environmental company's vehicle to come and collect it. However, since the ward implemented the waste classification model at the source, recyclable waste such as plastic bottles, beer cans, paper, metal, etc., my family has kept it in a separate corner, waiting until the weekend to bring it to the collection point at the block's cultural house. My family has been doing this for a year now."
It is known that the model of waste classification at source was piloted by Vinh City in Truong Thi Ward and Block 13 was chosen as the first block to implement. Before starting the implementation, Truong Thi Ward organized a seminar on environmental protection, land administration meetings, natural resources and environment meetings. In particular, Block 13 was trained, given specific instructions, and organized a model launch. In addition, the propaganda work of waste classification was also deployed in conjunction with the "Green Sunday" movement and the "Anti-plastic waste" movement.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Dao - Head of the Women's Association of Block 13, Truong Thi Ward said: After having a plan to deploy the model, we increased propaganda to the people on many channels such as social networks, loudspeakers, distributing leaflets, banners, and slogans. Gradually, people saw the effectiveness of the model, so the number of participants increased.
The locality has also established a waste sorting team at source with 50 participating households in Group 1, Group 3 and Group 4 on Nguyen Xi Street and the ward has surveyed and purchased waste sorting equipment. People's awareness is increasingly raised, after using food, cooking... all types of recyclable waste are kept by people, not mixed with household waste for the environmental company to collect as before. Therefore, the amount of waste in the block every day is also less.
After 1 year of implementation, the results show that the waste classification work is done well. Every Sunday, recyclable waste is collected by the people themselves, gathered at the cultural house, the volume fluctuates a few hundred kilograms per month. This amount of waste is then sold, supplementing the fund to support difficult circumstances and policy families in the area. Many cases are supported from this source of income.
Mr. Nguyen Van Ngoc - Head of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Vinh City said: Currently, the amount of waste in Vinh City is up to more than 300 tons/day and night and this number continues to increase. Therefore, to minimize the amount of waste that needs to be collected, processed and turned into resources, sorting household waste at source, increasing recycling and reuse of waste is a mandatory requirement. The pilot model in Block 13, Truong Thi Ward has initially brought about effectiveness. In the coming time, the city will continue to expand the sorting of waste at source in many other localities in the area.
