The effectiveness of the self-governance model in residential areas in Thai Hoa town.

In Thai Hoa town, many self-governing models have been developed to promote production and build civilized residential areas, thereby positively impacting socio-economic development and community cohesion.

Thai Hoa town has developed many self-governing models for production development and solidarity in building civilized residential areas. These models have a positive impact on socio-economic development and community cohesion.

Waste sorting, creating a fund to support members.

Over 200 kg of waste paper, 49 kg of plastic waste, and various other scrap materials were collected by the Women's Association of Tan Tien Hamlet, Hoa Hieu Ward, Thai Hoa Town in November.

Every last Sunday of the month, households in Tan Tien neighborhood collect recyclable materials to "turn waste into funds." On schedule, the women's association members gather, each with their bags for sorting waste. Through this activity, stories of community spirit and neighborly love are also shared.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Quynh Phuong, Head of the Women's Association of Tan Tien Ward, said: "This activity has been maintained by the women for 7 years now, so each family in the block has the habit of sorting waste at the source, concentrating on collection, and reducing plastic waste that pollutes the environment. On average, the association collects more than 1 million VND per month from this activity. Although the amount is not much, the women try to accumulate it into a common fund to support members with difficult circumstances, illnesses, etc."

Also from this fund, the women in Tan Tien ward have planted potted flowers, transforming the former garbage collection point into clean and beautiful street corners. As a result, the problem of indiscriminate garbage dumping no longer occurs.

Ms. Nguyen Van Anh, President of the Women's Union of Hoa Hieu Ward, Thai Hoa Town, said: "Implementing the movement launched by the Central Women's Union on building '5 no's, 3 clean' families, linked with building a civilized urban area, the Women's Union of the ward has chosen to promote the movement through many practical actions to ensure clean kitchens and houses while contributing to environmental protection... The movement was first implemented at the Tan Tien Ward Women's Union branch and has now been expanded to other wards in the area."

After 7 years of launching, the movement has raised over 400 million VND, providing timely assistance to disadvantaged members and poor children to help them excel in their studies through various forms, such as purchasing livestock and seedlings, buying health insurance cards, supporting the construction of charity houses; awarding scholarships, and supporting orphaned students through the "Godmother" Program, etc.

Community economic development cooperation

In Hamlet 7, Nghia Thuan Commune, a buffalo breeding cooperative was formed in 2022 with 7 members. Recognizing its practical effectiveness, the safe vegetable production cooperative officially began operations in 2023 with 12 members. Since its establishment, the cooperative members have shared experiences in farming and livestock raising, and actively participated in training courses organized by the commune. With the spirit of sharing knowledge among experienced members, the income of member households has increased significantly after a period of operation.

Ms. Truong Thi Xuan, a member of the safe vegetable farming cooperative, said: “Our households grow a variety of vegetables such as cauliflower, cucumbers, corn, kohlrabi, cabbage… Not only do we receive technical support through training sessions organized by the commune, but in daily production, if any problems arise, we can directly ask each other or ask other members of the cooperative for assistance in production and harvesting. Thanks to this, the yield has increased, and the quality of the vegetables is also better than before.”

Mr. Vo Sy Lieu, head of Hamlet 7, Nghia Thuan Commune, Thai Hoa Town, and also the leader of the cooperative groups for breeding buffaloes and producing safe vegetables, shared: “Because I am both the hamlet head and the leader of the cooperative groups, I can proactively gather information and share it with the villagers about weather forecasts, pest and disease situations, and market trends. In addition, after training sessions organized by the commune, we regularly exchange and share experiences to improve our knowledge and support each other during peak periods or when we are sick or facing difficulties.”

Besides their economic development benefits, the cooperatives, once operational, have fostered a spirit of solidarity and mutual support, strengthening community bonds.

According to Mr. Le Ke Vinh, Chairman of the Fatherland Front Committee of Nghia Thuan commune, 80% of the people in Hamlet 7 participate in agricultural production. The lives of the people have improved significantly thanks to their active participation in farming and livestock raising. Previously, people raised livestock on a small scale, but since the establishment of cooperatives, their income has improved considerably. Currently, there are only 2 poor households in Hamlet 7. Therefore, in the coming time, following the local development direction, the Fatherland Front Committee of the commune will continue to mobilize people to establish cooperatives and associations to develop the economy, believing that the lives of the people will become increasingly prosperous.

Previously, a cooperative model was successfully established in Hamlet 6, Nghia Thuan Commune. Starting with 6 initial households, the goat farming cooperative now has 17 member households, maintaining a total herd of 450-550 goats. This provides employment for 17 local workers with an income of 5-7 million VND per month. To date, the cooperative has linked up with traders from northern provinces, ensuring a market for its products.

Recognizing the effectiveness of cooperative economic development models and sustainable poverty eradication, in the coming time, the Fatherland Front of Thai Hoa town and other organizations and associations will continue to mobilize, gather, and unite all strata of people to replicate these models at the grassroots level. Next year, the Fatherland Front of Thai Hoa town will focus on building "Self-governing, united, prosperous, and happy residential areas" in all 9 communes and wards, continuing to effectively implement solidarity and mutual assistance to develop the economy and achieve sustainable poverty alleviation.
