Higuain helped Milan start their Europa League campaign with a victory.

The 1-0 scoreline didn't accurately reflect the match in Luxembourg, where Milan were completely dominant over the home side. The Italian team created numerous chances, especially in the first half, but lacked precision in their final touches.

Milan's victory came from a shot by Gonzalo Higuain that deflected off an opponent and into the net. However, that one-goal lead was enough for Milan to secure their first three points and take the lead in Group F, because in the other match played at the same time, Olympiakos, at home, drew with Real Betis.

This was a match where coach Gennaro Gattuso made a number of changes, giving opportunities to reserve players, those who had never played or started a game since the beginning of the season. Despite these changes, Milan still outplayed Dudelange. If Higuain, Samu Castillejo, Bakayoko, and Mattia Caldara had been more clinical in their finishing, the visitors could have opened the scoring in the first half.

In the 49th minute, Higuain missed another chance when he failed to beat home goalkeeper Joe Frising with a shot from a favorable position after a cross from Diego Laxalt. However, the Milan number 9 striker eventually scored when he received the ball from Castillejo and his shot deflected off home defender Prempeh, leaving Frising with no chance.

Milan had further opportunities afterwards, but they were unable to convert them into a second or third goal. Among these was Fabio Borini's close-range volley that hit the post. Dudelange was mostly passive and only managed one shot that forced goalkeeper Pepe Reina to make a save, a strike from Stolz.

"I'm happy with the team's attitude. Milan could have finished the game early, instead of struggling more than I anticipated. But the whole team tried their best and achieved the desired result," coach Gattuso said after the match. He also expressed regret for Higuain, saying, "He had many opportunities and should have scored a hat-trick."
