Hillary: 'Colin Powell offered me the opportunity to use a personal email account'

(Baonghean.vn) - Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton told federal investigators that former Secretary of State Colin Powell offered her a personal email account. This information was published by the New York Times late on August 18 (US time).

For over a year, presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has been hounded by questions about her use of a personal email account while serving as America's top diplomat.

The New York Times reported that among the information the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) sent to Congress on Tuesday were details of a more than three-hour interview with an agency directly involved in Hillary Clinton's use of a personal email account.

The newspaper also cited an upcoming book that describes a conversation at a dinner where former Secretary of State Collin Powell spoke with Clinton about using personal email, except for classified information.

The newspaper also reported that Clinton had asked Powell in an email from 2009 about how he used his power during former President George W. Bush's administration.

However, Reuters has not been able to independently verify this information. As of late Thursday, August 18, representatives for Clinton had not yet responded to the matter.

Colin Powell's office said in a statement that he could not recall the content of the conversation at dinner that evening. He did remember describing the system and how he used email to Clinton; but the statement did not say that Colin Powell had asked Clinton to do the same.

"He wrote an email to former Secretary of State Clinton describing how he used his personal email account for classified messages and how to improve communication within the State Department," the statement said.

The statement also said that Colin used a secure computer to manage classified information. “Colin Powell stated that he had no choice but to use his personal account because the government agency did not have a fully functional email system when he began using it in 2001.”

The Republican Party has consistently targeted the scandal surrounding candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server, using it as a factor that has led the American public to question her trustworthiness.

Last month, FBI Director James Comey announced that there were no criminal charges in the case, but warned the Democratic candidate about the careless handling of classified government information.
