After leaving Ulsan HD, former Malaysia national team coach Kim Pan Gon reached an agreement to lead Selangor FC with the goal of elevating the team's status and identity.

Selangor FC has officially announced the appointment of Kim Pan Gon as head coach of the first team, marking the surprising return of the South Korean manager to Malaysian football. This is seen as a strategic move by the team nicknamed "Red Giants" in their efforts to conquer new milestones in the Malaysia Super League.

The return of an "old flame" and expectations of raising the bar.

The appointment of Kim Pan Gon comes amidst a major structural overhaul being undertaken by Selangor FC. According to the club's website, interim manager Christophe Gamel will not leave the team but will instead take on the role of Technical Director. Gamel will be primarily responsible for building and developing the youth training system, creating a sustainable connection for the team's future.

A representative from Selangor emphasized: "With his wealth of experience and proven achievements, Kim Pan Gon is expected to excel in leading the first team and help the Red Giants reach new heights." The presence of the 56-year-old strategist is expected to bring a new lease of life thanks to his modern football philosophy and established discipline.

Reasons for choosing Selangor FC

Speaking at his unveiling, Coach Kim Pan Gon stated that the fans' enthusiasm and the leadership's vision were two key factors that brought him back to Malaysia. He was particularly impressed with the atmosphere at MBPJ Stadium, where the supporters consistently showed unwavering support for the team.

"The decision to join Selangor FC stems from my belief in the club's vision and commitment. Selangor has shown serious investment, a strong spirit of dedication, and a clear understanding of the leadership philosophy I bring," the South Korean coach affirmed.

Legacy at the national team and past controversies.

Before leading Selangor, Kim Pan Gon left a strong mark during his tenure with the Malaysian national team (2022–2024). His greatest achievement was leading Malaysia to qualify for the 2023 Asian Cup after more than four decades of waiting. At that tournament, a dramatic 3-3 draw against his home country, South Korea, significantly boosted the standing of Malaysian football on the continental stage.

However, his sudden departure in July 2024 to return to coach Ulsan HD in the K-League caused much controversy in public opinion and within the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM). His return to Malaysia after only a short time working in South Korea demonstrates the irresistible appeal of the football environment in this Southeast Asian nation.

With his deep understanding of the players and the competitive environment in Malaysia, Kim Pan Gon is expected to adapt quickly. His immediate task is to help Selangor improve their standing in the domestic league and build a distinctive attacking style of play to meet the expectations of the fans.
