This is the second time coach Mai Duc Chung has served as interim coach. At the 24th SEA Games, he coached the U23 team in the third-place match, after the VFF (Vietnam Football Federation) dismissed coach Alfred Riedl immediately following their loss to Myanmar in the semi-finals. However, due to severely low player morale, the team lost 0-5 to Singapore. Prior to that, during the period when coach Riedl underwent a kidney transplant, coach Mai Duc Chung coached the Olympic team and achieved victories against Lebanon and Oman in the qualifying rounds for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Coach Mai Duc Chung's greatest achievement at the national team level was winning the Merdeka Cup friendly tournament in 2008 in Malaysia, when he led the Vietnam U22 team.
The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) stated that there is currently no official plan for the head coach of the Vietnamese national team. Besides Coach Mai Duc Chung, two other candidates have emerged to replace Coach Huu Thang: Technical Director Jurgen Gede and Coach Hoang Anh Tuan, who led the Vietnam U20 team to qualify for the FIFA U20 World Cup in South Korea.
