Weak passport: the visa application process and how to minimize hassle.

These three stories illustrate how holders of low-power passports have to wait six weeks for visas, spend $600-$700 for a six-day trip, and often find themselves treated with disrespect.

Traveling with a "weak" passport isn't just about longer queues. It's about weeks of waiting, stacks of paperwork, extra fees, and the feeling of being judged at the border. The experiences shared by Alex (South Africa), Lily (China), and Pantha Roy (India) illustrate how this can alter the entire itinerary and the emotions of a trip.

The visa application journey as told by the author.

Alex, his South African passport, and the weeks of waiting.

Alex is a South African living in Singapore who frequently travels for business and independent leisure. However, her passport has been such a major obstacle that she says, "If someone offered me or my child a different passport, I would grab it immediately." The South African passport ranks 51st in the Henley Passport Index (HPI), placing it in the middle group based on the number of visa-free destinations.

Alex recounts that those holding more powerful passports often don't understand the time and cost involved. "Why would I upload every page of my passport from 10 years ago just to go on holiday to Australia? If you're traveling for business, what you have to go through is insane," she says.

A recent trip to Europe with her partner required Alex to apply for both a Schengen visa and a UK visa, which took six weeks. Because she had to return her passport, she couldn't go anywhere during that time – unacceptable for someone who travels frequently. On another occasion, she was asked for bank statements with a stamp, but only found out about them when she went to the visa application center. After several refusals, one place agreed to print a watermark for $10 per page. Each visit to the visa center cost an additional $50; the total cost for a six-day Italian visa was $600-$700, possibly more.

After several such experiences, Alex prioritizes visa-free destinations. "It makes a huge difference if you're going on a week-long vacation and have to pay $1,000 in visa fees," she says.

Lily, the Chinese tourist, and the hurtful questions

"It's an unequal system," Lily said. She has faced consular officers who were considered "arrogant," asking questions like, "Do you intend to overstay your visa?" On one occasion, Lily was even asked to submit a criminal record certificate or proof of no prior convictions, prolonging the process and increasing costs.

The travel barriers during her studies caused Lily to miss out on job opportunities requiring frequent international travel. "It wasn't just the disrespect during the visa application process, but also the way you're treated at border crossings," she said, believing that having a passport from a European country like the UK would have made things easier. She even considered applying for a Hong Kong passport – the condition being that she had lived and worked there for seven years.

Pantha Roy, Indian businesswoman: You can't just go on a whim.

Pantha Roy, an Indian businessman living in Singapore, said that traveling as an Indian citizen means spending extra money, time, and effort carefully reading the detailed requirements of each country. When planning a trip to South America, some places require precise declaration of entry points and modes of transportation. "You can't just do it haphazardly," he said.

In Europe, while his friends could book cheap flights within a week, Roy couldn't. Even for short trips, "you need to plan about three months in advance" to have time to book and wait for visa approval. The bureaucratic hassles made him choose to travel elsewhere instead of Europe. Even so, Roy said, "I like having my Indian passport. I won't give it up."

Fact-based information

  • Processing times can be lengthy: Alex's case took 6 weeks for both the Schengen and UK visas; Roy says you need to plan about 3 months in advance.
  • The costs are considerable: $50 per visit to the visa application center; $600-700 (or more) for a 6-day Italian visa; some places even charge $10 per page for watermarking of the statement.
  • Travel restrictions: while your passport needs to be submitted for a visa application, you cannot go anywhere during the waiting period.
  • The application requirements are meticulous: in some cases, applicants have to upload every page of their passport from the past 10 years (for travel to Australia); some places require a criminal record certificate; and some South American countries require a clear declaration of the port of entry and means of transportation.
  • Passport ranking influences the experience: the South African passport ranks 51st in the Henley Passport Index (HPI), placing it in the middle group in terms of visa-free destinations.

Suggestions to make the trip more relaxing.

  • If time is limited, consider choosing a visa-free destination – as Alex prefers – to reduce visa costs for short vacations.
  • Book and prepare early: start at least a few weeks before your departure date; for many destinations, it's advisable to plan several months in advance, as Roy shared.
  • Budget for visa costs: in addition to the visa fee, there may be application center fees, printing, document authentication, and travel expenses.
  • Read each country's instructions carefully: pay attention to detailed requirements regarding entry point, means of transport, bank statements, or criminal record checks if requested.
  • Avoid scheduling travel while your passport is being held for processing.

Conclude

Trips are still worthwhile, but for those with low-power passports, the journey begins at the paperwork desk. Early preparation, understanding the requirements, and choosing a sensible destination will help you retain the most important aspect of an adventure: the freedom to enjoy yourself instead of being caught up in bureaucracy.
