Dams in Nghe An dry up, fields parched

(Baonghean.vn) - The continuous heat wave in recent times has caused Nghe An to face a record drought, lakes and dams have dried up, fields have cracked, crops have burned, and many areas have no water to produce summer-autumn rice.

According to the Nghe An Irrigation Department, the province has 1,061 reservoirs; of which the locality manages more than 959. Currently, due to the hot weather, 38 reservoirs and dams have a capacity of less than 30% of the design; of which, 19 reservoirs are at dead water level. In Do Luong district, Mr. Tran Ngoc Thuan - Head of the district's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said: The whole district currently has 122 reservoirs, currently, the water level is only 30 - 35%, the whole district has planted 7,900 hectares/8,100 hectares of summer-autumn rice, due to prolonged heat, many reservoirs have dried up, so the area has over 800 hectares of rice that have been planted and are suffering from drought. Nghe An Irrigation Department recommends that localities review the water situation and develop drought-prevention irrigation plans for each region.
