In a post on Instagram, Karlie Hay explained: "A few years ago, I had a lot of personal issues and did things that were not true to who I was. I admit that I used those words publicly in the past - it's not something to be proud of and there's no excuse for. Through hard work and education, I learned right from wrong, through pageantry. I can say that I am a better person today. I am honored to hold the title and will use this platform to promote the values of the Miss Universe organization, and myself, to celebrate the confidence, beauty and perseverance of all women."

The 18-year-old was criticized just hours after being crowned. |
In a statement to E! News, the Miss Universe organization wrote: "The language Karlie Hay used is unacceptable at any age and does not reflect the values of the Miss Universe organization. As Karlie said, she was at a different stage in her life and made serious mistakes, for which she regrets and has sincerely apologized. We stand with her."
In addition to the Karlie Hay scandal, the Miss Universe organization is also being criticized for racism. Former Miss Teen USA - Kamie Crawford - posted on Twitter that the top 5 of this year's contest were all blonde, white girls. She criticized racism and unfairness. The Miss Teen USA organization did not comment on the incident.
