Visiting the family of Ms. Tran Thi Thoa, wife of Mr. Nguyen Vinh Ha (born in 1987) in hamlet 16, My Thanh commune (Yen Thanh), who was swept away by floodwaters in the recent flood, we could not help but feel sorry when standing in front of the family's cramped, makeshift, severely degraded level 4 house. There was not a single valuable asset or household item in the house. Mr. Ha's mother, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tin (75 years old), with a haggard face wearing a white mourning scarf, had no more tears to cry for her son. Ms. Thoa was breastfeeding her son with her lifeless, uncertain eyes.
Nguyen Vinh Ha is the youngest child in the family, orphaned at the age of 9. His father passed away due to a serious illness, leaving his four children to his young wife. Due to difficult circumstances, Ha and his siblings had to drop out of school early to work to earn a living. When he grew up, Ha decided to follow his villagers to the South to work as a construction worker and then met his current wife, Tran Thi Thoa. Thoa is from Nam Dinh and because of difficult circumstances, she went to the South to do all kinds of jobs to make a living. In 2008, they got married happily. The young couple's life was difficult in a rented room, but they always encouraged each other to try to make a living. After a while, the couple decided to return to their hometown to live with their elderly mother in the old house.

Mr. Ha passed away, leaving behind an old mother, a young wife who is often sick, and three young children. |
Life became more difficult when two daughters were born one after another. My Thanh land was barren and rocky, two fields were not enough to feed five people in the family, so in 2011, leaving the eldest daughter Nguyen Thi Ngoc Anh to her elderly mother to take care of, Ha and his wife took their youngest daughter Nguyen Thi Anh Hong back to Saigon to find work. Here, Ha worked as a construction worker while Thoa applied for a job as a worker in an industrial park. When the job was stable, the couple took Hong to the South to live with them. Then the third son was born, the couple's income was not enough to cover the children's schooling, so the whole family had to return to the countryside to live. In addition to farming, Ha continued to work as a construction worker while Thoa also applied for a job at a garment factory near home. “My husband and I planned to borrow some more money to repair the house next year because every time it rains, the whole house gets wet, and the children don’t have a place to study, but he left us so soon…”, Thoa’s voice trembled with sobs.
On October 15, in the midst of a prolonged heavy rain, Mr. Ha was worried about going to the sweet potato field and was swept away by floodwaters. Mr. Ha passed away, leaving behind his sick young wife, three young children, and his sickly mother over 70 years old.
Nguyen Thi Ngoc Anh and Nguyen Thi Anh Hong are students in class 2B and 1C at My Thanh Primary School, while Nguyen Vinh Nguyen is not yet 2 years old. What will their future be like without their father? The tragic situation of Thoa's family is in dire need of the community's help and support.
