A group of students from the mountainous district of Que Phong are weaving traditional bamboo baskets. Lang Thi Minh Trang (Quang Phong commune, Que Phong district, a student in class 10A1) said: "Our class is busy preparing for the Spring Festival tomorrow, such as wrapping banh chung and banh tet (traditional Vietnamese rice cakes), and decorating with peach blossoms. Participating in the festival of wrapping and cooking banh chung (traditional Vietnamese rice cakes) were officers and soldiers from the 654th Transport Brigade, Logistics Department of Military Region IV, a unit twinned with the school. Captain Nguyen Dinh The - Deputy Political Officer of Battalion 2, 654th Brigade, said: "We have many activities in coordination with the No. 2 Ethnic Boarding High School and have maintained them for many years. However, this is the first year I have guided Lao students in wrapping and cooking banh chung. This school year marks the first time Lao students have come to study at Ethnic Boarding School No. 2. After three months of studying Vietnamese, they have become accustomed to the Vietnamese way of life and customs, and many of them speak Vietnamese quite fluently. Ms. Luong Thi Nga, the class teacher, said: In addition to celebrating the traditional Lunar New Year with Vietnamese students, tomorrow afternoon (February 2nd) the school will hold a farewell party for the Lao students before they return home. Currently, the Nghe An Department of Education and Training has also sent a document to the Departments of Education and Training of the six provinces where Lao students are studying in Nghe An. Em Souklthida from Savanakhet province (white shirt, right) is one of the Vietnamese-speaking international students who speaks fluent Vietnamese despite having only studied in Vietnam for a very short time. Speaking about her experience during the first semester, she said: "I love the environment here and I also love the traditional Vietnamese Tet holiday. Besides the two banh chung (traditional rice cakes) I made myself, I will buy more banh chung and banh tet (another type of traditional Vietnamese rice cake) to bring home as gifts for my family."
